Our History

In 1873, our founder, Eu Kong, left his hometown of Foshan in Guangdong, southern China, to seek his fortune in Malaya. Determined to alleviate the suffering of tin mine coolies by providing them with quality Chinese medicine and herbs, Eu Kong established our first shop in Gopeng, Perak, in 1879. This shop, named "Yan Sang," translates to "caring for mankind" in Chinese.

Eu Kong’s only son, Eu Tong Sen, grew up immersed in the family business and dedicated himself to realizing his father's vision. With unwavering determination and keen foresight, Eu Tong Sen established a presence in both Malaya and Singapore by the 1920s, becoming a leading figure in the tin mining and rubber plantation industries. Wherever he established tin mines, Eu Tong Sen also set up a medical shop to safeguard the health and well-being of his workers. As he expanded these medical shops beyond Gopeng, he decided to strengthen the brand by incorporating the family name. Thus, from that point forward, the shops were known as Eu Yan Sang.

From a humble, homegrown business, Eu Yan Sang has evolved into a public company with global aspirations. However, our core values of caring for mankind remain constant and unchanging. These values, as relevant today as they were in the past, form the bedrock of our heritage.
